Abstract
Substantially pure anhydrous beryllium fluoride free from oxide is obtained by acting on beryllium hydroxide at elevated temperature with hydrofluoric acid which is dry or has a humidity of less than 20 per cent. A continuous current of hydrofluoric acid may be passed over the hydroxide, if desired under pressure, and the temperature used is preferably lower than the fusion temperature of beryllium fluoride, say 700-750 DEG C. Prior to the reaction, the beryllium hydroxide may be compressed, and reaction may be effected in apparatus coated with or composed of fluorspar or beryllia. Removal of water vapour may be ensured by carrying out the reaction in the presence of gaseous carbon dioxide. Specifications 345,902 and 485,711 are referred to.
