Abstract

Hydrofluoboric acid is produced by decomposing calcium fluoride, e.g. fluorspar, with sulphuric acid and boric acid in the presence of ammonium sulphate at, say, 60 DEG C. up to the boiling point, and separating calcium sulphate and other undissolved impurities. Excess sulphuric acid is neutralized by calcium carbonate. Aluminium ammonium fluoride is obtained by adding aluminium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate or ammonia, and may be decomposed to aluminium fluoride by sublimation of the ammonium fluoride or by the addition of aluminium hydroxide.
