Abstract

5-Sulphoisophthalic acid is prepared by sulphonating isophthalic acid with fuming sulphuric acid in the absence of a sulphonation catalyst at a temperature below 190 DEG C. The product may be recovered as the monohydrate. Reaction with methanol gives the dimethyl ester which may be neutralized with alkali or alkaline earth metal oxides, hydroxides or carbonates to give salts of dimethyl 5-sulphoisophthalate which may then be reacted with aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols or amines to give surface-active alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of di-esters or di-amides of 5-sulphoisophthalic acid.
