Abstract

Cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone of improved purity and yield are recovered from an oil fraction, obtained by partial oxidation of cyclohexane followed by removal of unreacted cyclohexane and of a heavy ends fraction, by a process comprising the steps of mixing the oil fraction with an aqueous alkaline solution, agitating the mixture, allowing the mixture to separate into an organic phase comprising cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol and an aqueous phase, and separating the organic phase from the aqueous phase. The agitation may be carried out for a period of 5-60 minutes at a temperature of 100-0 DEG C. The alkaline solution may be a solution of sodium, potassium, or lithium hydroxide. The organic phase separated from the aqueous phase is preferably centrifuged to remove residual aqueous phase therefrom. The separated organic phase is distilled to obtain substantially pure cyclohexanone as overhead product, and a bottoms fraction containing cyclohexanol, or a fraction consisting of substantially pure cyclohexanol. If desired, the cyclohexanol may be subjected to dehydrogenation to produce cyclohexanone.
