Abstract
In the production of acetylene and possibly ethylene by the thermal decomposition of methane in the presence of hydrogen, an aromatic hydrocarbon is added to the feed as a homogeneous catalyst. Benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, styrene, naphthalene, methylnaphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene or biphenyl or mixtures thereof may be added in amounts of 0.01-5% by mol. of the gaseous mixture. Decomposition is effected at above 1100 DEG C.; in the examples cracking is effected in the presence of a bed of alumina or silica pebbles.
