Abstract

The destructive hydrogenation, pyrolysis or dealkylation of hydrocarbons in the gaseous state mixed with hydrogen is effected by contact with a metallic filament heated to 1,000-1,500 DEG C., whereby atomic hydrogen is formed at the filament. Petroleum or coal gas by-products are treated to obtain products from which benzene, naphthalene, phenol and pyridine are readily obtainable together with methane, ethylene and acetylene, alkyl aromatics are dealkylated with concommitant desulphurization while dealkylation of o-cresol yields some benzene and toluene and of lutidines yields sone benzene. The electrically-heated filaments may be bare tungsten wires or platinum mesh (e.g. as a cylinder) preferably arranged parallel to the axis of the reactor.ALSO:The dealkylation of alkyl aromatic compounds is effected in the gaseous phase in the presence of hydrogen and a metallic filament heated to 1000-1500 DEG C. at which atomic hydrogen is formed. In examples o-cresol yields a product including phenol and 2,4- and 2,5-lutidines, a product containing pyridine and methyl pyridines as well as hydrocarbon products.
