Abstract

Ethylene and acetylene are obtained by subjecting a liquid hydrocarbon to thermal cracking and subjecting the gaseous product, without cooling, to the action of an electric arc. The starting material, gasoline, benzine or gas oil, is cracked at 500 DEG C.-700 DEG C. at about 2 atmospheres for up to 100 seconds. Gaseous hydrocarbons, e.g. methane, ethane, propane or butane, may be added before or after the thermal cracking. An alternating current arc may be used.
