Abstract

Petroleum fractions containing a major proportion of components boiling above 900 DEG F. are freed from metal contaminants, for example nickel, vanadium and iron, by contacting with a liquefied normally gaseous hydrocarbon, washing the fractions with a synthetic asphalt, and separating the oil phase from the asphalt phase containing the metal contaminants. Fractions referred to are residual petroleum fractions and gas oil. Hydrocarbons specified are ethane, propane, butane, propylene and butylene; a mixture of 30 per cent butane and 70 per cent propane is referred to. The process may be carried out at 100-300 DEG F. The synthetic asphalt is produced by thermally cracking cycle oil obtained in the catalytic cracking of gas oil. The products of the thermal cracking are preferably treated to remove gas oil, for example by distillation or by treatment with a liquefied normally gaseous hydrocarbon. The treated crude oil may be catalytically cracked, for example, together with gas oil distilled from the crude oil before treatment. The residue from the catalytic cracking process may be used to prepare the synthetic asphalt.
