Abstract
An asphaltic residual hydrocarbon oil is blended with a hydrocarbon cycle oil (which boils above about 700 DEG F. and which is obtained from a catalytic cracking operation) before being deasphalted with the aid of a hydrocarbon deasphalting solvent. The deasphalted product is suitable for use as a feedstock to a catalytic cracking operation or as a feedstock for the production of lubricating oils. The hydrocarbon deasphalting solvent may comprise low boiling hydrocarbons, for example those containing from 2 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule, or mixtures thereof. Particularly suitable deasphalting solvents comprise propane and butane. A process is described in which (a) crude petroleum is distilled to yield gases, light and heavy naphthas, gas oil and reduced crude; (b) the reduced crude is blended with cycle oil and then propane-deasphalted; (c) the deasphalted product, blended if desired with a portion of the gas oil fraction mentioned under (a), is catalytically cracked employing a fluidized catalyst and means for regenerating spent catalyst; (d) the cracked products are fractionated to yield gas, gasoline, heating oil, light cycle oil and a heavy cycle oil bottoms fraction; and (e) a portion of the heavy cycle oil mentioned under (d) is recycled for use as the cycle oil employed in stage (b). A list of catalysts suitable for use in stage (c) is given.
