Abstract
Acetylene and olefines are obtained by partial combustion of a hydrocarbon under super-atmospheric pressure, injecting a hydrocarbon having at least two carbon atoms per molecule to cool the combustion products while concurrently being pyrolysed and further quenching the reaction products with water. The first hydrocarbon may be methane which is partially oxidized at 3-6 atmospheres. Gasoline is injected in one or more stages to cool the gases to 800 DEG -700 DEG C. and then water injected to cool further to 150 DEG -130 DEG C. Preferably the cooling water is not heated above the boiling point at the pressure employed and is recovered as hot water, e.g. at 130 DEG C., for use in heating solvents containing dissolved gases in the subsequent solvent extraction.
