Abstract

Acetylene and ethylene are obtained by the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, at a pressure higher than 3 atmospheres absolute, by contact with hot gases obtained by reaction of a combustion gas with oxygen both of which are saturated with water heated by the reaction products and then preheated before the combustion. In the drawing oxygen from source 2 and combustible gas from source 1 (e.g. residual gas) are saturated <PICT:0969494/C4-C5/1> with water in columns 4 and 3, preheated and reacted in zone 6 of the reactor. Part or all of the combustion gas may be replaced by gasoline, e.g. part of the pyrolysis feed from source 19 which is also saturated with water. Hydrocarbons to be pyrolysed are introduced at 7 and 9 and the products quenched with water at 11. The hot water obtained is used in column 4. The gases are further cooled indirectly in heat exchanger 13 with water then used in column 3.
