Abstract
Furnace carbon black is prepared by introducing a combustion fuel, e.g. CH 4 , and oxygencontaining gas, e.g. air, into a combustion zone burning the mixture to form combustion gases and heat, passing the combustion gases and heat to a reaction zone 14 where a hydrocarbon feedstock and superheated steam in an amount of 0À2 to 2À0 pounds of steam per gallon of hydrocarbon feedstock are contacted with the combustion gas to form carbon black, the carbon black formation is terminated by passing the reaction products into a quenching zone 16 contacting with a quenching medium and removing the quenched reaction products from the reactor. The combustion fuel and oxygen-containing gas may be introduced into the combustion zone as a mixture. The superheated steam and hydrocarbon feedstock may be premixed before introduction into the reaction zone, or the superheated steam may be introduced separately and coaxially about the feedstock.
