Abstract

Acetylene, ethylene and propylene are obtained by mixing a hydrocarbon distillate in the vapour phase with a gas at a temperature of at least 1200 DEG C., which gas is steam or a mixture of steam with the combustion product of hydrogen or a hydrocarbon and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, passing the mixture through a soaking zone for a short period, mixing with the effluent a normally liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons and after a short contact time rapidly cooling the product. The hydrocarbon distillate may be a C4-C8 paraffinic fraction boiling in the range = 12 DEG C. to 170 DEG C. It is preferably preheated to above 500 DEG C. and after mixing with the hot gas the temperature is 900 DEG C.-1400 DEG C.; the weight ratio of hot gas to hydrocarbon may be 5 : 1 to 4 : 10. The second hydrocarbon may be the same as the first but is preferably propane which may be mixed with ethane and butane and may be preheated so as to give an initial temperature on mixing of 700 DEG C.-950 DEG C. This feed may be introduced at one or more points and may be diluted with steam. The total time from the first stage to the final cooling may be 0.02-0.25 second and the time from introducing the second feed to the final cooling may be 0.01-0.20 second. The product should be cooled to below 400 DEG C.
