Abstract

<PICT:0996202/C4-C5/1> In the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to obtain acetylene, ethylene and propylene the hydrocarbon is introduced as a gas into a flowing combustion gas in an induction zone, the hydrocarbon velocity being substantially below that of the combustion gas whereby non-uniform mixing of the hydrocarbon and combustion gas, the conditions being such that had instantaneous mixing occurred the products would have been acetylene and ethylene only. The induction zone is preferably a narrower section, 9 (Fig. 1), situated between a wider combustion zone 3 and a wider reaction zone 14. The hydrocarbon feed, e.g. ethane, propane, butane, pentane, natural gasoline or naphtha, vaporized if necessary and preferably preheated to 500-600 DEG C., is introduced into the combustion gas which has a velocity of 500-1,500 ft/sec. preferably at a velocity of one sixth of that of the combustion gas, e.g. 50-250 ft/sec. when the induction zone is 7-11 inches in diameter. Cracking is effected at 800-2,500 DEG C. and 0-5 p.s.i.g. for 0.01-0.4 second.
