Abstract

664,359. Cracking hydrocarbons to make olefines. KAFTAL, G., and BALLABIO, G. May 18, 1948 [May 30, 1947], No. 13481/48. Class 32 Olefines of low molecular weight are obtained from mineral oils, mineral oil distillates (petrol, kerosene, gas oil), coal tar oils and pitch, by atomizing the raw material in intimate admixture with air or oxygen into a heated chamber, the amount of oxygen being sufficient, by combustion of part of the raw material, to maintain the chamber at a temperature greater than 480‹C. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of steam ; and a catalyst such as pulverized silica gel, may be employed. Chamber A which is lined with refractory material, was preheated to 600‹C. by means of burner M. The combustion gases leave through chimney L. A fuel oil (Engler viscosity 6 at 60‹C.) was then sprayed with oxygen (containing nitrogen as impurity) through sprayer I; burner M was turned down, chimney L was closed and outlet O was opened. The proportion of oxygen to oil was adjusted so as to maintain the chamber at 620‹C. Coke (6 per cent by weight of the feed-oil) was discharged from the bottom of the chamber. The vapours leaving through outlet O were passed through dustremover B, and then cooled in heat-exchanger C which is also used to preheat the feed-oil and oxygen. The vapours were then passed through cooler D where a liquid condensed, and the olefine-rich gas remaining was then washed free from carbon dioxide in scrubber N. The condensate was divided into two aromatic fractions with a cut-point at 180‹C. The olefine-rich gas, which comprised 58 per cent by weight of the feedoil, contained ethylene (28 per cent), propylene (10 per cent) and butylene (5 per cent). The saturated hydrocarbons separated from the gas, and the higher-boiling liquid fraction, may be returned to the reaccolumn 3.
