Abstract
Activated carbon for absorption of gases such as ethylene and propane is prepared by coking, e.g. at 1100 DEG -2000 DEG F preferably in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen or methane, a mixture of tarry material and acid sludge obtained in the treatment of petroleum fractions with sulphuric acid, and activating the resulting coke with steam, carbon dioxide, or flue gas at 1100 DEG -1800 DEG F. say until the weight yield is 50-60 per cent. Before coking the mixture may be distilled at up to 750 DEG F. to remove water and volatile matter. Suitable tarry materials are coal, wood, lignite, petroleum or cracking tars, pitch, bitumen, asphalts, crude petroleum residue, reduced crudes, heavy petroleum fractions, heavy polymers from petroleum treating operations or gilsonite, and the ratio of acid sludge to tarry material in the mixture may be 1:1 to 10:1.
