Abstract

Activated carbon is obtained from acid sludge coke (prepared as described below) by treatment with an oxidizing gas at a temperature of 1300 DEG to 2000 DEG F. while maintaining the oxidizing gas at a partial pressure less than atmospheric pressure, i.e. by employing sub - atmospheric pressure when a single gas is used or employing a diluent such as nitrogen or refinery inert gas at atmospheric pressures and above. Total pressures range from 2mm. vacuum to 6 atmospheres. Oxidizing gases may be oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur vapour or steam and the activation is preferably effected in a fluidized bed. Carbon dioxide may be used as a diluent at lower activating temperature when steam is the oxidizing gas. The partial pressure of the oxidizing gas preferably ranges from 0.05 to 0.8 atmospheres and yields of 40 to 60 per cent. for steam, hydrogen sulphide or sulphur vapour, or 20 to 65 per cent. by weight for carbon dioxide are optimum. Activation times may range from 10 minutes to 3 hours. The acid sludge coke employed is obtained by carbonising the tarry acid sludge by contacting it in the absence of air with a mass of hot cake maintained with continuous stirring at a temperature of 400 to 750 DEG F. to distil off volatiles. The carbonized sludge is then transferred to a kiln and partially burnt with air at a temperature of 650 DEG F. to 1200 DEG F. for 5 to 25 minutes. The bulk of the resultant hot coke is recycled and the remainder, about one-seventh, is removed as product and treated according to the invention, to produce an activated carbon particularly suited to absorption of C1 to C5 fractions from refinery fuel gas; to the recovery of light ends from low pressure catalytic cracking gases; to the separation of methane from nitrogen and hydrogen; to the recovery of acetylene from the Wulff process gases; to the separation of oxygen from air and to the recovery of hydrocarbons from coke oven gases.
