Abstract
In the production of carbon disulphide by the catalytic or non-catalytic interaction of methand- and/or ethane-containing gas and sulphur at a temperature of 450-700 DEG C., a hydrocarbon gas containing (other than inert constituents) at least 96 mol. per cent. of methane and/or ethane, not more than 4 mol. per cent, of hydrocarbons containing 3 or more carbon atoms, and not more than 0.7 mol. per cent of hydrocarbons containing 4 or more carbon atoms, and produced from a hydrocarbon gas containing more than 4 mol. per cent. of hydrocarbons containing 3 or more carbon atoms, and substantially pure sulphur obtained from natural sulphur containing a substantial amount of carbonaceous impurity, are employed. The hydrocarbon gas may contain 80 per cent of ethane but usually contains not more than 10 per cent thereof. It preferably contains not more than 0.3 mol. per cent of hydrocarbons containing 5 or more carbon atoms. Hydrocarbon gas may be modified for use in the invention by treatment with absorbent oil, charcoal or clay, by mild cracking, or by a prereaction in a non-catalytic chamber. Hydrocarbon gases specified are natural, refinery, and coke oven gas. Purified sulphur is used as described in Specification 802,426.
