Abstract

Sulphur-containing active carbon is desulphurised by treating the active carbon with water in the presence of oxygen at a temperature from room temperature to the boiling point of the suspension of active carbon in water. Preferably the oxygen is introduced into the active carbon suspension in the form of a mixture with inert gases, in pure form or in the form of air. The invention allows sulphur to be removed from active carbon made from relatively inexpensive starting materials such as carbonised lignite, petroleum coke or mineral coke.
