Abstract

613,651. Purifying gases. DERHAM, L. J., and JOHNSON, F. J. June 24, 1946, Nos. 18887 and 28715. [Class 55(ii)] A process for the removal of sulphur, especially organic sulphur, compounds from fuel gases, comprises bringing the gases without previous addition of steam, into contact with either the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or a mixture of such substances at a temperature between approximately 100‹C. and 850‹C., the substances being supported by and distributed throughout a porous or cellular support. The latter may consist of a refractory material, e.g. pumice or Kieselguhr, or it may consist of coke. In one method, the contact material is prepared by mixing finely ground hydrated lime with a finely ground, highly swelling coal, preferably in the proportions of 1 to 10. The mixture, which may first be briquetted or granulated, is heated to 800‹ C. under conditions giving a cellular coke, which will contain calcium oxide in an active form and with a large surface area. This coke is broken and graded and placed in a reaction chamber through which the gas to be treated is passed. In another method, the material is prepared by impregnating the support with a solution or suspension of the oxide, hydroxides or carbonates and drying. The process may be rendered continuous by regenerating the active material by treatment with steam and carbon dioxide. Specification 367,577 is referred to.
