Abstract

SO2 is removed from a gas mixture using acid sludge coke produced by coking acid sludge at a lower temperature, preferably about 350 DEG C. and containing 5-12% of organically combined sulphur, and wherein the sulphur compounds formed on the adsorbent are subsequently removed. The sulphur compounds may be removed by treating the adsorbent with CS2 and steam. Comparative examples of acid sludge, peat and low temperature carbonization coke are given.
