Abstract

An aqueous solution of ammonium sulphite and/or bisulphate, optionally containing a thionate, is brought into intimate contact at elevated temperature, preferably above 120 DEG C., with sulphur and with hot gases under acid conditions such that ammonium sulphate and sulphur are produced and sufficient water is evaporated to allow crystallization of the ammonium sulphate without further evaporation. The thionate may be thiosulphate. Slightly elevated pressure is preferably employed. The solution may first be treated with sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid and then hot inert gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen passed through. Alternatively hot sulphur dioxide gas may be employed to both acidify and heat the solution. The sulphur dioxide may be produced by burning hydrogen sulphide (recovered from coke oven gas by absorption in ammonic solution and desorpition in a deacidifier at an immersion burner. A solution containing ammonium sulphite, bisulphite and thiosulphate for treatment may be produced by circulating a solution of ammonium sulphite between a gaseous ammonia and a sulphur dioxide absorption stage and then adding aqueous ammonia, the gaseous ammonia (together with some hydrogen sulphide) being provided by the coke oven gas after the hydrogen sulphide removal step and the sulphur dioxide by the sulphur dioxide combustion gases evolved from the solution treated.
