Abstract

<PICT:0481355/III/1> The combustion of hydrogen sulphide or gases containing it in a free flame with limited amounts of oxygen while maintaining within the flame or in its neighbourhood a temperature sufficiently high to avoid extinction of the flame is carried out under a boiler, corrosion of the metal parts by the sulphur being prevented by maintaining the temperature below 350 DEG C., or by coating the metal parts with zinc. The steam is generated at a temperature above 119 DEG C., e.g. at 2-4 atmospheres pressure, so that the sulphur is condensed in a mobile form. Extinction of the flame is avoided by arranging heated bodies in its neighbourhood or by carrying out the combustion in an insulated chamber which is preheated, and a temperature of 200-700 DEG C. is maintained, depending on the purity of the hydrogen sulphide burnt. If desired, the combustion may be carried out in two stages. The gases leaving the boiler are cooled, preferably to 120-200 DEG C. and, if desired after separation of the sulphur, are catalytically treated to convert any hydrogen sulphide remaining, e.g. by the Claus process, which may be carried out in two stages. Sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide or sulphuric acid may be added to the gases undergoing combustion. In the arrangement shown, the hot gases produced in the combustion chamber 1 are cooled by a boiler 2 having boiler tubes 6. The steam produced is passed through a superheater 7, and the feed-water is passed through preheaters 8 and 9 where the temperature is raised above 120 DEG C.
