Abstract
In the preparation of sulphur from gases containing hydrogen sulphide and also hydrocarbons by the catalytic oxidation of the hydrogen sulphide, the reaction is carried out at a temperature of at least 350 DEG C. and if required up to 600 DEG C., whereby complete combustion of the hydrocarbons also occurs, and deposition of carbon on the catalyst is avoided. The catalyst is preferably in a form having a large active surface, e.g. grains of diameter 3--15 mm., or small balls or tubes, and if necessary the reactants may be preheated by heat exchange with the reaction products.
