Abstract

<PICT:0364144/III/1> For the conversion of methane into liquid hydrocarbons the gas is passed through a quartz tube across a chromed iron rod heated electrically and arranged in a second quartz tube at right-angles to the first as shown in the drawing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 296,753, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.].ALSO:<PICT:0364144/IV/1> Liquid hydrocarbons are produced by treating methane or gases containing methane at 800-1200 DEG C. in contact with catalysts consisting of or coated with chromium or graphite. The catalysts may be electrically heated. The walls of the reaction chamber, may be made of the same materials as described in Specification 366,494. In examples, (1) a gas containing 85 per cent of methane is passed through a quartz tube across a chromed iron rod heated electrically and arranged in a second quartz tube at right-angles to the first as shown on the drawing, the temperature of the rod being about 1100 DEG C.; a condensate is obtained consisting of benzene and a thin liquid tar; (2) a similar gas is passed through a reaction chamber containing graphite rods heated to 1200 DEG C. by hot reducing gases which are blown in periodically; the condensate contains 70 per cent of benzene. Specification 316,422, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 296,753, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.].
