Abstract
Acetylene and aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained by subjecting propylene or a gas containing at least 20 per cent of propylene to a temperature between 700 DEG and 900 DEG C. for a period of between five seconds and three minutes. Diminished pressure and reaction times and the lower temperature all favour the production of acetylene. The cracked gases from petroleum plants are suitable initial materials, but should be purified from sulphur compounds before use. Suitable heating tubes may be made of chrome-nickel steels or silica, and they may be packed. In the mode of operation described in example (1), the chief products are methane and aromatic hydrocarbons, while example (2) describes the preparation of acetylene together with methane.
