Abstract
In a process for converting methane or a methane-containing gas into CO and H2 by reaction with steam in the presence of a nickel catalyst, the gaseous reaction mixture is passed over a catalyst disposed on and attached to a shaped surface, the catalyst being heated by one or more radiant tubes in the same vessel as the catalyst, and also by the oxidation of part of the combustible gases by a supply of air or oxygen. The catalyst may form a layer on the outer surface of the radiant tube(s) or on the surface of one or more rods located longitudinally in an annular space between the radiant tube and the wall of the reaction vessel. The catalyst temperature is maintained at 550-800 DEG C. A suitable feed is a gas produced by passing a vaporized mixture of predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbons containing an average of 4-15 C. atoms per molecule with steam at a temperature above 350 DEG C. through a bed of a nickel catalyst at normal or increased pressure such that the bed is maintained by the reaction at 400-600 DEG C. The reaction tube(s) may be as illustrated in Fig. I or II of Specification 1,039,756.
