Abstract

<PICT:0967466/C4-C5/1> High-temperature reaction of hydrocarbons is carried out in a regenerative furnace (see Division F4) incorporating a reaction chamber containing regenerative masses 21, 22, 23 and 24 which are heated to a desired temperature by reversible operation of the furnace. Thereafter reactant gas is supplied from pipe 27, effluent gases being led off either by pipe 25 or 26. The furnace is said to be applicable to: (1) the cracking of hydrocarbons to produce unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. acetylene, ethylene or propylene; (2) the conversion of hydrocarbons with air, oxygen and/or water to synthetic gas or fuel gas (largely hydrogen and carbon monoxide); and (3) the reaction of hydrocarbons with a nitrogen compound, e.g. ammonia, giving hydrogen cyanide.
