Abstract
<PICT:0665723/III/1> In a modification of the parent Specification heat is supplied to a bed of fluidized solids by burning a fluid combustion mixture in contact with a heat transfer surface which separates the fluidized solids from the combustion mixture such that the combustion is localized near the point of entry of the combustion mixture. The combustion may take place in a series of tubes such as the one shown in Fig. 4 which are disposed within the fluidized bed, the combustion mixture being introduced through tubes 16, 16a; baffles 40 promote turbulence and localize the combustion and inserts 50 improve the rate of heat transfer. The burning of the combustion mixture is preferably confined to 1/10 to 1/4 of the length of the path to be traversed. The method may be applied to processes for the reformation of hydrocarbons with steam and/or CO2 in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen or mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The catalyst may be nickel oxide supported on magnesia, alumina and/or silica and the reformation temperature about 1200-1600 DEG F.
