Abstract
Olefins are obtained by rapidly heating a hydrocarbon mixture boiling above about 300 DEG C. containing less than 25 per cent by weight of aromatics in a relatively small heating zone containing a solid oxidationpromoting substance to at least 500 DEG C. by effecting complete combustion of part of the mixture with the aid of an oxygen-containing or oxygen-producing gas in the zone and then passing the hot effluent through a zone in which cracking of the mixture takes place. Combustion may be effected by adding oxygen, air, nitrogen oxides or ozone and passing the mixture through activated alumina, bauxite, silica gel, titanium oxide, cerium oxide, thorium oxide, chromium trioxide, vanadium pentoxide, or oxides of cobalt or manganese. Normally from 10 to 15 per cent by weight of the supplied material is burnt. The non-aromatic part of the initial feed may be normal paraffins, isoparaffins and naphthenes if olefins of less than 6 carbon atoms in the molecule are required. If however higher olefins with a straight carbon chain is desired then the starting material should contain more than 60 per cent by weight of paraffins. Cracking temperatures of 650-900 DEG C. may be used and residence in the cracking space may be from 0.001 to 3 seconds. Steam may be used as a diluent.
