Abstract
Olefines, particularly ethylene and propylene, are produced by the cracking of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons in a fluidized bed of refractory solids wherein an oxygen-containing gas is introduced below the bed to burn off carbon deposits and so supply at least part of the heat required for cracking the hydrocarbon while the hydrocarbon is introduced into an upper part of the bed. Further heat may be added by introducing an extraneous fuel just above the oxygen inlet, e.g. a condensate or tail gas obtained from the reaction products. The fluidized bed, in order that it may so be divided into sections, should have a depth 1 1/2 to 6 times its maximum width and may be cylindrical or taper towards one end. The solid may be quartz sand of 0.1-1 mm. diameter and may also contain a catalyst. The cracking temperature may be 650-900 DEG C. and the oxygen-containing gas, which may be air, is preferably preheated to the reaction temperature. The oxygen-containing gas should be free of water to prevent the water gas reaction occurring.
