Abstract

Continuous catalytic reactions, e.g. the water gas shift reaction or the methanation reaction in an H2- and CO-containing gas, are carried out in a thermally insulated reactor which has an internal coaxial hollow cylinder, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), or Venturi, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), and orifices or nozzles for continuous supply and withdrawal of reactants, the velocity of introduction of the reactants and the arrangement of the reactor parts being such as to ensure continuous circulation of a substantial body of the reactants and products in the reactor. The reactants may be preheated to control the reaction temperature, and the nozzles and the central cylinder or Venturi may be adjustable to control the reaction. The catalyst may be coated on the internal walls of the reactor, or may be supported on formers therein, and curved baffles may be included in the reactor to assist circulation. Two specific examples are described; one relates to the water gas shift reaction and the other to the catalytic methanation of a gas made by the catalytic gasefication of a light distillate.ALSO:Continuous catalytic reactions, e.g. the water gas shift reaction or the methanation reaction in a combustible gas mixture, are carried out in a thermally insulated reactor which has an internal coaxial hollow cylinder or venturi, and orifices or nozzles for continuous supply and withdrawal of reactants, the velocity of introduction of the reactants and the arrangement of the reactor parts being such as to ensure continuous circulation of a substantial body of the reactants and products in the reactor.
