Abstract

A reactor for carrying out exothermic catalytic gaseous reactions of the type wherein heat exchangers for the reactant and reaction product gases are interposed between a plurality of catalyst chambers is characterized in that tubular heat exchangers 4, 5 are positioned centrally within annular catalyst chambers 1, 2, 3 and openings are provided in the heat exchanger jackets through which reactant gases pass into the catalyst chambers or reaction product gases flow back into the heat exchangers either directly or through surrounding intermediate spaces. Reactant gases enter at 6, pass sequentially <PICT:0660540/III/1> through heat exchangers 5, 4, then through openings in chamber 8 into catalyst chamber 1. Partly reacted gases pass through intermediate space 9 into the jacket of heat exchanger 4, then through intermediate space 10 into catalyst chamber 2 and similarly through the jacket of heat exchanger 5, intermediate space 12 and catalyst chamber 3, reaction products being withdrawn at 14.
