Abstract

A method of supplying heat to a fluidized bed of solids comprises contacting the fluidized mass with a heat-transfer surface heated by a fluid combustion mixture burning in contact with the surface which also separates the burning mixture and the fluidized mass. The heat transfer surface may comprise conventional heating coils or banks of tubes disposed within the fluidized bed and through the fluid combustion mixture is circulated or the fluidized mass may be contained within the heat transfer surfaces which are surrounded by the fluid combustion mixture. In a modification, a portion of the fluidized solids is withdrawn from the bed, circulated in indirect heat exchange with the burning fluid combustion mixture and returned to the bed. The preferred fluid combustion mixtures are (a) a suspension of powdered solid fuel in air and (b) a mixture of combustible gases and air in which finely divided inert solids are suspended. The method may be applied to the conversion of petroleum, oil shale and pitch; and to the reformation of methane or the like with steam to produce a synthesis gas. A fluidized bed containing a reformer catalyst such as nickel oxide with promoters such as magnesia and alumina is maintained in a single reaction zone heated to a temperature of about 1500 DEG F. by a fluid combustion mixture passed through a bank of tubes disposed within the fluidized bed, a mixture of steam and natural gas being introduced into the zone. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also provided for the use of the following fluid heating mediums; liquids such as refractory oils or fused inorganic salt mixtures (e.g. a mixture of NaNO3, NaNO2 and KNO3); molten metals (e.g. lead); mercury vapours; hot combustion gases. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
