Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is produced by using sulphur as fuel in an internal-combustion engine working on the Diesel or like constant pressure principle. The exhaust gases may be passed into a chamber or burner in which any residual sulphur is oxidized, and the sulphur dioxide, after purification, if this be necessary, and possibly after adjustment of its temperature, may be converted to sulphuric acid by the contact process. To avoid corrosion the air supplied to the engine is dried, and the sulphur may be introduced into the cylinder after being melted by means of super-heated steam or by the heat of the combustion gases. The melting pot may be let into a wall of the combustion chamber in which the residual sulphur is burned. Specification 238,621 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the production of the sulphur dioxide in an internal-combustion engine of any type. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sulphur dioxide is produced by using sulphur as fuel in an internal-combustion engine working on the Diesel or like constant pressure principle. The exhaust gases may be passed into a chamber or burner in which any residual sulphur is oxidized, and the sulphur dioxide may be converted to sulphuric acid by the chamber or tower process or by methods employing spraying systems. Oxygen carriers such as ozone and nitrogen oxides may be employed. To avoid corrosion, the air supplied to the engine is dried and the sulphur may be introduced into the cylinder after being melted by means of superheated steam or by the heat of the combustion gases. The melting pot may be let into a wall of the combustion chamber in which the residual sulphur is burned. Specification 238,621 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of sulphur as fuel in any type of internal-combustion engine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
