Abstract

A gas containing sulphur dioxide, oxygen, and water vapour is subjected to catalysis to convert part of the sulphur dioxide to trioxide, which is then removed as concentrated sulphuric acid by condensation with the whole of the water vapour, the remaining gases being reheated and subjected to further catalysis. In a modification, the water vapour is added after the first stage of catalysis. The inlet and exit temperatures of the first converter may be 440 and 600 DEG C. respectively, and those of the second one 380 and 450 DEG C. The exit gas from the first stage may be cooled slowly to the dew-point of the concentrated acid and then more quickly to 200 DEG C. The degree of conversion in the first stage may be 65 per cent.
