Abstract
Sulphur trioxide is recovered from gases obtained by the combustion of hydrogen sulphide, by absorption in sulphuric acid at a concentration of 65-80 per cent. (W/W) and a temperature of 85-130 DEG C., the precise working conditions being so selected that a simultaneous condensation of water vapour is avoided or limited. In order to maintain the washing acid continuously at the same concentration an amount of water vapour may be allowed to condense from the gas phase to correspond with that used up in the formation of sulphuric acid by the absorption of the sulphur trioxide.
