Abstract
Carbon dioxide contaminant in acetylene is removed by contacting the gaseous mixture with a concentrated aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium carbonate at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the aqueous solution of the corresponding bicarbonate, the acetylene being relatively insoluble in the concentrated solution. The bicarbonate solution formed is withdrawn and heated to remove the carbon dioxide and the solution recycled. Preferably the concentration of the carbonate solution is as high as can be attained without deposition of the bicarbonate from the solution during gas absorption, e.g. 60-80 per cent by weight in the case of potassium carbonate.ALSO:Acetylene is freed from carbon dioxide contaminant by contacting the gaseous mixture with a concentrated alkali metal or ammonium carbonate at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the aqueous solution of the corresponding bicarbonate, the acetylene being relatively insoluble in the concentrated solution. The bicarbonate solution formed is withdrawn, heated to remove the carbon dioxide and the solution recycled. Preferably the concentration of the carbonate solution is as high as can be attained without deposition of the bicarbonate from the solution during gas absorption, e.g. 60-80 per cent by weight in the case of potassium carbonate.
