Abstract

Oleum of high concentration, e.g. 65 per cent, is produced from gases containing a relatively low concentration of sulphur trioxide, e.g. contact gases, by contacting a solution of oleum of relatively low concentration in a primary absorber with hot sulphur trioxide-containing gas in counter current flow, withdrawing a portion of the gas from the absorber near the gas inlet thereof, the conditions being such that said withdrawn gas contains an increased sulphur trioxide content, and absorbing the withdrawn gas in a solution of oleum of relatively high concentration in a secondary absorber so as to further increase the concentration of this oleum. The gas issuing from the secondary absorber may be led back into the primary absorber towards the gas outlet end thereof to recover further quantities of sulphur trioxide. Contact gases at 230-250 DEG C. and containing 7 per cent of sulphur trioxide and 27.5 per cent oleum, at a temperature at which the vapour pressure corresponds to the partial pressure of sulphur trioxide in gases containing about 3 per cent of sulphur trioxide, may be used in the primary absorber. Oleum of 65 per cent concentration may be used in the secondary absorber and recycled, after adding water to maintain said concentration and bleeding off the excess solution formed.
