Abstract

A process for the manufacture of chemically pure sulphuric acid comprises subjecting a hot gas containing sulphur trioxide and which may contain water to the addition of a quantity of water necessary to establish a desired concentration of the resulting acid, the conditions during this addition being such that the temperature of the resulting gas is maintained above the dew-point, and this gas is cooled to a temperature of 40-60 DEG C. by means of circulating cooled liquid sulphuric acid of approximately the same or somewhat lower concentration than the desired acid, with the production of sulphuric acid mist which is then isolated by passing the mist-laden gas in a turbulent flow through a filter layer consisting of a grid made of ceramic material and a layer of glass balls. The gas containing sulphur trioxide is obtained by contact oxidation of moist sulphur dioxide derived from the oxidation of sulphur, or pyrites roasting gases or hydrogen sulphide combustion gases.
