Abstract

321,425. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 7, 1928. Nitrogen peroxide.-Gases containing nitrogen peroxide in such proportion that cooling by water is sufficient to separate liquid nitrogen peroxide, are formed by oxidizing gases rich in nitric oxide with nitric acid of 25-68 per cent strength at 40-110‹ C. The gases are passed up a packed tower down which nitric acid flows, and water is separated from the gases after treatment by condensation or other means. Dilute nitric acid from the base of the tower may be restored to its original concentration by absorption of nitrogen oxides, Gases containing nitric oxide suitable for treatment are obtained by acidifying nitrite solutions, by reducing with sulphur dioxide nitrate solution such as the acid mother liquors from the manufacture of potassium nitrate, by decomposing nitrosyl chloride or by heating the solution obtained by absorbing nitric oxide in a solution of a ferrous salt.
