Nitrogen peroxide in liquid form is prepared from gases containing lower oxides in dilute form such as those obtained bv the catalytic oxidation of ammonia or nitrogen, by converting the lower oxides into compounds such as nitrites, nitrates or nitrosyl compounds, from which they are liberated in concentrated form as nitric oxide which is mixed with oxygen to form nitrogen peroxide. A solution of nitrites obtained by absorption of the gases in alkali or alkaline earth compounds may be decomposed by treatment with nitric acid, and solutions of nitrates or nitrosyl chloride by reaction of the acidified solution with reducing agents, such as with sulphur dioxide at 70-80‹ C. or with coal or other carbonaceous substance at the boiling point.
