Abstract
The concentration of nitric oxide in a gas mixture is decreased, at least to a level at which any NO still remaining is not deleterious in use, by treating said gas mixture with an aqueous solution of hypochlorous acid, chlorous acid, or sodium chlorite, the NO being oxidized to higher oxides or oxyacids of nitrogen, e.g. NO2, HNO2, and HNO3. The gas mixture may be town gas, producer gas, coke oven gas, coal gas, "convert gas", or flue gas. When the gas mixture is free of carbon dioxide, or contains it as an undesired constituent, the preferred treatment is with a sodium chlorite solution of pH 7 to 12 whilst, if CO2 is to be retained in the gas mixture, the pH is desirably 3 to 6. After treatment, the gas mixture may be scrubbed with an aqueous alkaline scrubbing solution to remove the products of oxidation of NO. The aqueous solution of HClO, HClO2 or NaClO2 may be circulated between the top and bottom of a scrubbing tower, and a second tower may be provided for ensuring the purity of the scrubbed gas. When the scrubbing capacity of the first tower is exhausted, the second tower may be used as the primary scrubber, and the first tower replenished with fresh scrubbing solution and used as the secondary tower.
