Abstract
Dilute nitrous gases of a low degree of oxidation are absorbed by means of sulphuric acid of about 90-91 per cent strength, directly without preliminary oxidation. The resulting nitrosyl-sulphuric acid can be almost completely denitrated by allowing it to flow down a heated dephlegmation apparatus, no de-nitrating substance being employed. The residual sulphuric acid is sufficiently strong to be used repeatedly for further absorption of nitrous gases. The concentrated nitrous gases which are evolved may be converted into 67 per cent nitric acid by treatment with air and water, or may be used for the production of liquid nitrogen peroxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of sulphuric acid of about 90-91 per cent concentration for the absorption of the dilute nitrous gases; it is stated that "strong sulphuric acid" is employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
