Nitric acid, catalytic production of.- Concentrated nitric acid is obtained by catalytically oxidizing ammonia to produce nitric oxide and water which are then separated from one another, oxidizing the nitric oxide to nitrogen peroxide, absorbing this in a portion of the water, and treating the solution with oxygen. In the illustrated apparatus air and ammonia are mixed at A, compressed at B to 5-6 atmospheres, and passed through a filter C to the contact chamber D. The products are cooled in the heatexchanger E and coil F and passed to the separator I. The nitric oxide is mixed in the chambers H with oxygen from the pipe G and the resulting nitrogen peroxide is absorbed in the water passing through the chambers L. Superfluous water is withdrawn from the system at O. The solution is treated in the column P with compressed oxygen at 40-50‹ C. with production of concentrated acid. Unabsorbed gases after passing through the heat-exchanger, drive an engine S coupled to the compressor B.
