Abstract

502,155. Ammonia oxidation. CHMURA, T. April 23, 1937, No. 6398. Void. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 1 (i) and 1 (ii)] The liquids obtained by absorption of the products of ammonia oxidation are concentrated by spraying them into the air or oxygencontaining gas used for the oxidation. Preferably evaporation is facilitated by the application of the heat generated in the oxidation. The saturated air is subsequently cooled to remove its water or nitric acid content, any residual oxides of nitrogen being recirculated with the air to the converter. The air may be thus treated in two stages, firstly with liquid from the last absorber, then with liquid from an earlier absorber, cooling taking place after each stage. Another part of the oxidation air may be sprayed with liquid ammonia to produce the reaction mixture, the resulting cold being used to condense strong nitric acid from the reaction products.
