Abstract

<PICT:0869062/III/1> In a method for producing nitric acid by the catalytic combustion of gaseous ammonia to obtain a gaseous mixture containing nitric oxide, the steam in the gaseous mixture is condensed only to a partial extent, and the remaining gases comprising nitric oxide, nitrogen peroxide, oxygen and steam are maintained in the vapour phase so that the gases react and form nitric acid in the vapour phase, which is then separated and condensed. A gas mixture obtained by the catalytic combustion of ammonia in 1 is passed through a heat exchanger 2 to a condenser 3, where only a fraction of the steam is condensed, and then to a chamber 4 where the gases are oxidised to form nitric acid in the vapour phase. The gases are cooled at 5 and 6, and the nitric acid is absorbed in aqueous nitric acid solution in towers 8 and 9.
