Abstract
1278828 Oxides of nitrogen; nitric acid L MARZO-RODRIGO 22 Aug 1969 42029/69 Heading C1A Nitric acid is prepared by catalytic oxidation of superheated NH 3 vapour with compressed air, followed by cooling, and absorption of NO 2 in water to yield HNO 3 , wherein NH 3 is superheated by indirect heat exchange with a secondary stream of compressed air from a compressor, this air thereafter being passed through the product HNO 3 solution to bleach it and then mixed with the oxidation reaction gases to oxidize NO present to NO 2 prior to absorption, and the tail gases from the absorber are used to cool, in a heat exchanger, the hot reaction gases from the catalytic oxidation stage, and then passed to a turbine for operating the compressor. The superheating of NH 3 may be supplemented by controlled indirect steam heat exchange. The tail gases may be heated by indirect exchange with the exhaust gases from the turbine before being used to cool the oxidation reaction gases. The final oxidation of NO to NO 2 is preferably carried out before the dew point of the gases is reached.
