Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a process for producing nitric acid by the absorption of nitrogen oxides formed by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia, a first expansion of the absorber tail gas in a gas turbine is preceded by heat exchange with the hot reaction gases leaving the oxidation stage and is followed by reheating the tail gas by a further heat exchange with the reaction gases and a further expansion in another gas turbine, there being no prior or intermediate use of the sensible heat of the reaction gases. The hot reaction gases may be first used to heat the tail gas in a heat exchange stage immediately before the first expansion, then used to reheat the tail gas between the first and second expansions and finally used to preheat the tail gas before the heat exchange stage which immediately precedes the first expansion.
