Abstract

Sulphuric acid production.. F6A. Comprises the following stages: (a) roasting sulphur or metal sulphides, such as iron pyrites, with an excess of air or oxygen to give SO2, (b) passing the resulting gases containing SO2 and excess air or O2 to a catalyst to convert SO2 to SO3, (c) absorption of the SO3 in H2SO4 and (d) expanding the gaseous effluents from (c) in a gas turbine to recover energy from the process. Steps (a), (b) and (c) are conducted at superatmospheric pressure, pref. 5-15 bars. Pref. gas leaving stage (a) is cooled by heat exchange or expansion in a gas turbine before passing to (b). Stage (b) may be conducted in two or more steps between which heat is recovered. One or more absorption stages may be interposed between two conversion steps. Gases leaving stage (c) may be used to extract heat from the effluent gases from stage (b) and are pref. burnt before passing to the gas turbine.
